Hang Hole Pouches: What a Euro Slot Really Costs in Structure, Tooling and Shelf Fit

Matte stand-up food pouches hanging from a brushed metal retail hook rack by their euro slot hang holes

A hang hole pouch is a stand-up or flat pouch with a punched euro slot, round hole or sombrero cut in the top header, so the pack can hang from a retail peg instead of standing on a shelf. Choose the hole from the fixture backwards: a 30 × 10 mm euro slot fits twin-hook rails, a 6–8 mm round hole fits single pegs. Keep the hole in the header, above the zipper and above the product cavity, so it never becomes a leak path.

What Is a Hang Hole Pouch and When Is It Worth Specifying?

A hang hole pouch is not a different pouch type. It is a standard pouch — three-side seal, stand-up, flat bottom — with an extra punch in the header above the top seal. The hole itself costs almost nothing; the money sits in header height, reinforcement and whether the hole lets a filled pouch tear off the hook.

Hanging display earns its keep in three situations. First, peg walls in convenience stores, hardware-style retail and pet specialty chains, where shelf depth is limited and vertical space is cheap. Second, small formats under 250 g, where a pouch standing on a shelf disappears behind the product in front of it. Third, products sold on clip strips and end-cap rails, where the fixture only accepts hanging packs.

Hanging display is a poor choice for formats above roughly 1 kg and for products sold through e-commerce only. A hanging pouch that never sees a peg is pure added cost.

Euro Slot vs Round Hole vs Sombrero: How to Choose the Hole

Three hole styles cover almost every retail fixture. The fixture decides, not the brand.

Hole styleTypical cut sizeBest fixtureLoad behaviour
Euro slot30 × 10 mm slotTwin-hook Euro rails, most European groceryWide bearing area, resists tearing under load
Round hole6–8 mm diameterSingle peg hooks, convenience and DIY retailConcentrated stress, usually needs a reinforcement patch
Sombrero / triangle8–10 mm wide profilePeg hooks with a locking tabEasy to hang, harder to remove; used for high-theft items

The euro slot is the safest default for export programmes because it distributes load over 30 mm rather than a single point. A round hole is cheaper to punch, but the stress concentration at the top of the circle is where hanging pouches fail.

What Dimensions a Hang Hole Actually Needs

Two dimensions decide whether a hanging pouch survives the shelf: how much material sits above the hole, and how far the hole sits from the zipper.

How Much Material Must Sit Above the Hole

Leave at least 6 mm of laminate between the top edge of the pouch and the top of the hole, and aim for 8–10 mm when the filled weight is above 500 g. That strip of material is the only thing holding the pack on the hook. If you cut it to 3 mm to save film, the pouch will pull through the slot long before the product sells.

A reinforcement patch — an extra layer of film or a heavier header laminate bonded across the hole area — is the standard fix for round holes above 250 g. It adds film area in a small region, typically a few percent of total material, and roughly doubles the load the header can carry before tearing.

Header Height and Where the Hole Sits Relative to the Zipper

The header is the flat area between the top edge and the top seal or zipper. A workable header is 15–20 mm tall. This is where the hole lives.

This position matters for barrier. The hole punches through every layer, including the foil or metallised barrier layer. Sitting in the header above the top seal, it never breaches the sealed cavity. If the punch overlaps the seal or cavity, you have a real leak path, so check the die line against seal geometry before approving artwork.

What a Hang Hole Does to Barrier, Tear Strength and Shelf Life

The hole does not reduce barrier if it stays outside the sealed cavity. What it does change is tear propagation. A cut edge in a laminate is where a tear starts. Under a hanging load, the stress concentrates at the top of the slot or hole, and a tear that starts there runs across the header and drops the pack.

Two tests are worth specifying on the header area rather than on the film generally. Tensile behaviour of the laminate is measured by ASTM D882, and tear propagation resistance by ASTM D1922, the Elmendorf method. Both run in the machine and transverse direction; for a hang hole, the transverse direction across the header is the one that matters. A practical acceptance line: after a 24-hour hang test at 1.5 times nominal pack weight, no tear longer than 2 mm from the cut edge.

How Much Weight Can a Hang Hole Carry?

There is no universal number — it depends on laminate, header geometry and hole style. Working ranges for common food-grade laminates:

  • 50–250 g, round hole without patch: adequate for most single-peg fixtures.
  • 250–750 g, euro slot or patched round hole: the normal spec for hanging coffee, dried fruit and pet treats.
  • Above 1 kg: hanging is usually wrong; use a shelf-standing format with a handle.

Settle it with a hang test, not a calculation. Fill ten pouches to the upper fill-weight tolerance, hang them on the actual fixture and inspect at 1 hour, 24 hours and 7 days.

Tooling, MOQ and Cost: What a Small Brand Actually Pays

The punch is a small die-cutting tool that sits in the pouch-making machine, typically a one-off cost in the low tens of US dollars for a standard euro slot or round hole, reusable on every later run of that bag size. Because the punch belongs to bag making rather than printing, it does not change plate or cylinder cost and does not raise the minimum order quantity.

The real added cost is material. A 15–20 mm header plus a reinforcement patch increases film area per bag by roughly 5–10 percent, and that flows straight into unit price. Ask your converter to quote the bag with and without the header so you can see the delta.

Five Mistakes That Kill Hanging Pouches on Shelf

  • Choosing the hole before checking the fixture. Peg diameter and hook spacing decide it, not the design.
  • Putting the hole too close to the top edge. Under 6 mm of material means pull-through.
  • Overlapping the punch with the top seal or zipper. That breaches the cavity.
  • Forgetting the barcode. A hole or hook through the quiet zone makes the pack unscannable under GS1 General Specifications.
  • Specifying hanging display for an online-only product. You pay for a header nobody uses.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a hang hole pouch?

A hang hole pouch is a flexible pouch with a punched hole — usually a euro slot, round hole or sombrero cut — in the flat header above the top seal, allowing the filled pack to hang from a retail peg or hook for vertical display.

What size is a euro slot hang hole?

The commonly specified euro slot is 30 mm wide by 10 mm high, punched in a header 15–20 mm tall, with at least 6 mm of laminate left above the slot. Always confirm the exact profile against the retailer’s fixture specification before tooling.

Does a hang hole reduce the barrier of the pouch?

No, not if the hole is punched in the header above the top seal, because it never breaches the sealed product cavity. Barrier is only affected if the punch overlaps the seal area or the cavity, which is a die-line error rather than an inherent problem.

How much weight can a hang hole pouch hold?

It depends on laminate, header geometry and hole style, so a hang test beats a calculation. Hang ten pouches at 1.5 times nominal fill weight on the real fixture and inspect hole elongation at 24 hours and 7 days.

How much does a hang hole add to pouch cost?

The punch tool itself is a small one-off cost in the low tens of US dollars and does not change printing plates or minimum order quantity. The ongoing cost is material: a header plus reinforcement patch typically adds roughly 5–10 percent to film area per bag.
